Kicking off with a thrilling start to the week is New Zealand’s richest race meeting on the calendar. Runon the eve of the Book 1 Sale, the lucrative Karaka Million Series will be the highlight of the day with notonly one but two $1 million races – the Karaka Million 2YO and the Karaka Million 3YO Classic. Graduatesof the Yearling Sale are eligible to enter this lucrative NZB incentive series.
The twilight meeting will be held at Ellerslie Racecourse and in addition to the two $1 million feature events isa support card of four quality Group races. Buyers, owners, and enthusiasts from around the world will flock to Ellerslie as NZB welcomes them ahead of Karaka 2018’s yearling showcase.
What makes Karaka so special is the consistent deliveryof high performance graduates around the globe. In aslittle as six seasons alumni of the Sale have reached 100 Group 1 wins. In the last four seasons they have claimed 72 Group 1 titles – making New Zealand Bloodstock the leader in this key statistic by a wide margin.
Last season nine individual Group 1-winning graduates of the Yearling Sales triumphed in 10 Group 1 events.They not only won significant races on home turf but also some of the most coveted races in Australia and Hong Kong including the Australian Oaks, Australian Derby, and Hong Kong Sprint.
Over the past five years New Zealand thoroughbreds have won 35% of all Group 1 Derby and Oaks races in Australia and nearly half of all Hong Kong Derbys in the last fifteen years. Statistics like these cement the reputation of New Zealand horses punching above their weight when they make up only 5.5% of the population.
Newcomers to the kiwi population will go through the Karaka sale ring a day earlier this year with 2018 seeing in the revamped sales format. The first 100 Lots from Book 1 will be offered at the night session beginning at 5pm on Sunday 28 January with the 600 remaining Lotsfrom Book 1 offered from Monday 29 January onwards with selling commencing at 11am each day.
Book 1 presents 700 of the very best horses the New Zealand industry has to offer. Featuring some of the world’s finest pedigrees and the progeny of a host of global powerhouse sires, this is the centrepiece of the week. In 2017 the Premier Sale (now Book 1) featured a colt by the New Zealand legend O’Reilly who subsequently topped the sale at $825,000.
Book 2 has become an elite session in its own right. This season’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas winner Aloisia, along with last season’s Australian Derby winner JonSnow (sold for $65,000), Two Thousand Guineas winner Ugo Foscolo ($50,000) and Herbie Dyke Stakes winner Volkstok’n’barrell ($50,000) were all sourced from this session. This year’s Book 2 has 378 yearlings cataloguedand will run across Thursday and Friday, 1-2 February.
Book 3 will offer the remaining 169 yearlings on Sunday 4 February and doesn’t fall short of potential Group 1 winners with the likes of recent dual Listed Singapore winner Gilt Complex, along with Group 1 winners Gaultier and Iamishwara having emerged from this session.The National Yearling Sales Series offers an extensive selection of sires, both proven and young stallions, from across the world. There are 133 sires represented across the three sessions including 16 first season sires.The compelling pedigree pages are boosted with the perfect environment New Zealand offers for breeding and raising superior racehorses. Receiving the best start on the rolling hills and lush pasture, they are then prepared by expert horsemen and women completing the equation of producing an ultimate thoroughbred racehorse.
